Our Pedigree
Middle White Pigs
Little Oak Farm is home to the Rosedotphilbry
herd of Pedigree Middle White Pigs. We named our herd after our
parents, yes it is a very strange way to always rememeber them. We
have our own breeding stock of Pedigree Middle Whites on the farm,
3 Boars & 12 Sows. We keep various bloodlines, as we are very
keen and active in preserving the breed of pig.
The Middle White pig is registered with the RBST
as an endangered species, as there are less than 200 breeding sows
in the country, a far cry from being on of the countries most
popular pig before WW2. The Middle White is well known in the
industry as the only specialist pork joint pig in the country and
is regarded by many of the countries top chefs as an excellent pig.
Producing an excellent tasting meat with a good fat to meat
ratio.
The breed itself was established in 1842 in
Keighley, North Yorkshire. A well known local Middle White pig
breeder by the name of Joseph Tully was showing some of his famous
Large White Pigs at the Keighley Agricultural Show. When it came to
the judging some of the pigs were considered to small to be judged
as Large Whites. As the "merits of the pigs were so extraordinary"
a commitee was summoned who decided the pigs were also too big to
be classed as Small Whites. So it was decied a 3rd Class would be
formed and so the Middle White was born. The Small White is no
longer with us. It became extinct in 1912.
